How early can you get an MOT and keep the same date?
In short: you can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before your current one runs out and keep the same renewal date next year. If your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can have it done and keep 15 May is 16 April.
Why go early?
- Time to fix anything. If the car fails, you have up to a month to get it repaired while your current certificate is still valid.
- Easier to book. Garages get busy, and leaving it to the last week can mean a long wait.
- No date drift. Within the window, your renewal date stays the same each year.
Can I go earlier than that?
Yes, you can have an MOT at any time, but if it’s more than a month (minus a day) before the expiry date, your renewal date moves to a year from the new test.
Driving without a valid MOT
You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT, and it can affect your insurance. The only exceptions are driving to a pre-booked test, or to or from a garage for repairs needed to pass.
Don’t forget
- Vehicle tax is separate, and has its own renewal date.
- Servicing isn’t part of the MOT. Many garages offer both on the same visit.
How Sort Admin helps: add your MOT due date and set a reminder for a month before. Open it to book, then add the new date and Sort Admin moves you on to next year.
